Sergio considers himself to be self-taught, learning directly from his own observations of the masters who continue
to inspire his own work. Originally he intended to pursue a career as a painter, which has allowed him to keep his
compositions rooted in painters mind-frame. He began photographing his family as reference material for paintings.
Sergio’s artistic aspirations were so tightly focused on his ideas and concepts from such an early age that
traditional studies left him dissatisfied. The school of greatest learning for him has been “The School of Trial and
Error,” where he is a permanent and voracious student. He challenges himself in making each piece better than the
one created before it.
His early influences include photographers such as Joel Peter Witkins, Nan Goldin, Jeff Bark, and Andrea Modica.
His strengths as an artist comes from his choice of subjects and the original – often unconventional way he depicts
them. His subject range is vast – ranging from abstract, human portraiture to still life and landscape. Through the
efforts of self-study and hard work, Sergio continues to hone his artistic skills. He has an extensive body of work
developed through many years of dedication.
His work shares some attributes of minimalism, surrealism, Art Brut, pop, and abstract expressionism. His artwork is
infused with autobiographical, psychological, and sexual content. His previous shows have included paintings,
sculptures, performance art and video installations.
Although Sergio’s subject matter is often times confrontational, it is always fresh and vivid. He loves art for what it
reveals about our existence. He is always grateful for the opportunity to share his artwork with a wider audience.
